Learning Outcome #4
Over the course of this semester, we have been given the task of peer reviewing some of our classmate’s work on multiple occasions during our big writing assignments. This is a somewhat new task to me as I wasn’t asked to do it in high school often. Originally I was worried about these assignments as it was not something I had experienced and I wanted to make sure I could give my groupmates helpful feedback. As we did this throughout the semester I started to become more comfortable with it and better understand what feedback I should be giving. I was personally pleased with my peer review for one of my classmates, Wes. This was one of my more recent peer reviews so I had a solid understanding of what feedback to offer. First I try to stay away from grammatical and sentence-level errors as my peer will be able to figure those out on his own. Second, I try to give feedback on important topics that we have learned about in class. For example, a lot of my comments to Wes had to do with me wanting to hear more from his voice. This is also known as your “I Say” which we focused on when we worked with the book “They Say I Say”. Professor Miller let us know that this was important in our writing so I tried to make sure that Wes was using his. This is a comment that I feel could really improve his grade as this is a central part of our essays this semester. I also try to make my comments as specific as possible so there are direct things he can change to improve his essay. Professor Miller was also helpful as he worked with us to tell us what are important topics to focus on. With this guidance and my own thought process I feel like I have grown as an editor. This will also help me in working with my own work as well.
