Learning Outcome #2
In my second major writing assignment, I was faced with the unique challenge of having two texts as sources to use as evidence in order to prove my point. “Technophilia” and “The Empathy Diaries‘ ‘ were the texts I was provided with. Both these texts talk about the issues that come with modern technology and have lots of similarities. This made it easy for me to find common themes in the text and formulate my thesis. After I went through my thesis I went back to both texts and looked for quotes that would help me in proving my point to the reader. In doing this I was able to find quotes that agreed and advanced my thesis in a way that would help my reader understand my point of view. My thesis is about overuse and people becoming overly consumed in technology. I looked for quotes that showed examples of this. In Sherry Turkle’s text “The Empathy Diaries” she had a good example of overconsumption. “even children text each other rather than talk face to face with friends”(344). This quote easily correlates with my thesis as it shows the overuse of technology in the most simple example. Even face-to-face children will still overuse technology instead of communicating with friends. This advanced my point along and was able to help my reader to understand and agree with my thesis. Quotes are a great source of evidence to help me prove my point and I like to utilize them in order to easily prove my point.
